I don’t know if you’re into water, but I LOVE the stuff. Drinking it, bathing in it, and filling the cells of my body with it so they work properly.
If you asked me my favourite type of water, I’d have to say “CLEAN water.” And my least favourite type of water is “water that’s full of sewage”. Sadly, there’s a LOT of that kind of water around.
So a few months ago I made a documentary about sewage for Channel 4. In the course of making this TYPICALLY EXCELLENT piece of television, I have donated the contents of my bowels to science, spilt a load of fake effluent into the Royal Albert Docks in Liverpool and recorded a turd-themed podcast with Gary Lineker. What am I like? (answer: I am awful.)
Why have I done all this (other than out of a desperate need for attention?) It’s to show you all how much sewage is being spilled in our rivers and seas – and how little the water companies are doing about it.
So what are they spending their money on? Well, last year, according to one analysis, the water companies paid £1.3 BILLION in dividends to shareholders That's a lot of money that could have been used to reduce the vast amount of sewage they spill.
I want the water companies to stop paying dividends and invest that money in improving and solving this problem. If you agree, you can click below to send an email to your water company, asking them to sign up to what we're calling Joe's Poo Promise. It's a very simple system - you just click on the link for your water company, the email's already written, and I'm cc'ed so I can see how many of you agree.
Thanks for your help with making the world a better place (or at least one that stinks a but less of sewage)
